Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded more than two decades ago which has become one of the largest renewable energy platforms in the Iberian Peninsula, continues to take steps to consolidate the development of its clean energy project with the adjudication of the construction of its first two wind farms in Aragon: Las Mareas I and Las Mareas II.
Capital Energy has just signed a contract with GES – Global Energy Services under which this Spanish company specialised in engineering and construction of renewable energy projects will be responsible, from the first quarter of this year until the third quarter of 2025, for the engineering, supply, construction, commissioning and restoration works associated with the civil and electrical works of these new renewable energy facilities.
Located in the Zaragozan municipality of Mequinenza, these two wind farms will have a combined access capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) and their development will involve an investment of around 90 million euros.
Thanks to the 18 wind turbines of the N163/5.X model recently acquired from Nordex Group, they will be capable of generating 300,000 megawatt hours (MWh) per year, enough to provide clean electricity for the consumption of around 115,000 Aragonese homes and avoid the emission of some 111,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The development of the Las Mareas I and Las Mareas II wind farms by Capital Energy, whose transformation equipment has also been awarded to a Spanish company, Faramax from Extremadura, will lead to the creation of more than 420 direct jobs during peak construction periods and will provide stable jobs for 12 local professionals during the operation and maintenance phase.
Positive impact on the territory
In line with the commitment of both companies to the economic and social development of all the territories in which they carry out their activities, this contract will have, on the one hand, a positive impact on local employment. In fact, according to the recently signed agreement, GES – Global Energy Services plans to prioritise the hiring of both workers and subcontractors from Mequinenza and its region.
On the other hand, these facilities will have a contribution to the GDP throughout their lifetime equivalent to almost 1.2 million euros per year and an annual fiscal contribution to the local government accounts equivalent to more than 230,000 euros from the start of their operation.
With regard to the signing, the CEO of GES – Global Energy Services, José Luis García Donoso, said that “we are proud to be involved in the construction of this project and to be, once again, a trusted supplier for a market leader such as Capital Energy. Las Mareas I and II are, unquestionably, projects of great magnitude that will promote the development of the region, as well as boosting the generation of energy from renewable sources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere“.
Juan José Sánchez, CEO of Capital Energy, said: “We are delighted to award this new contract to a leading Spanish company in the field of energy infrastructure construction such as GES, after the brilliant work it carried out in the development of the La Solana photovoltaic plant in Extremadura. In this way, we continue to advance in our firm commitment to the Spanish supply chain, as well as to the generation of wealth and employment in all the territories where we operate“.
In this line, and thanks to this new contract awarded to GES – Global Energy Services, Capital Energy has already accumulated more than 480 million euros in contracts of national origin, in the fields of construction, equipment supply and work assigned to local engineering firms, for the renewable infrastructures that they are developing in our country. Of this amount, 330 million euros correspond to the seven contracts already signed with European turbine suppliers, including Nordex Group, Siemens Gamesa and General Electric.
