GES – Global Energy Services, part of CL Grupo Industrial and a global provider of engineering, construction and maintenance solutions for renewable energies, has been awarded the construction of a new photovoltaic solar plant in Navarra, Spain. The plant, owned by a Spanish investment group, has a capacity of 50 MWp and consists of 74,000 modules.
GES is carrying out a comprehensive EPC project for this facility, which includes the design and engineering, equipment procurement and construction of the civil and electrical works, as well as its evacuation infrastructure. The photovoltaic plant will be connected to the Olite substation, from which the clean and renewable energy will be distributed to the municipality of Olite and the Community of Navarre.
The works will be completed by the first half of 2025 and the facilities will be commissioned before the end of the year. The plant will generate 85,000 MWh/year of clean, renewable energy , equivalent to the annual consumption of some 24,000 households in Spain, while avoiding the emission of approximately 20,000 tonnes of CO2 over the same period.
Photovoltaic capacity in Navarre
This project represents a milestone in the reactivation of photovoltaic solar energy in Navarre. In 2023, the region added only 3 MW of new installed capacity, which represented just 0.005% of the new solar capacity installed in Spain during that year. In contrast, Navarre incorporated 202 MW of wind projects in the same period. According to Red Eléctrica statistics, by the end of 2023 the region had 170 MW of installed solar photovoltaic capacity, making solar photovoltaic energy the fourth technology in terms of installed capacity (5.1%), behind wind power, combined cycle and hydroelectric energy. In this context, the solar photovoltaic plant that GES – Global Energy Services has been awarded is a flagship project that will make a significant contribution to the Community’s total solar installed capacity, increasing it by around 25% in relation to the capacity reported at the end of 2023.
Regarding the project, the photovoltaic construction manager of GES, Santos García, pointed out that ‘we are very pleased that this new plant will reactivate photovoltaic projects in Navarre and increase the installed capacity of the Community of Navarre. This work allows GES to take on the complete EPC of the project, in which our company undertakes the integral project execution, ensuring that the investor’s business objectives are met’.
