Are there only cookies?
Some websites may use other storage forms similar to cookies but with more capacity, such as other forms of local data storage on the user’s device, for example:
- LocalStorage and sessionStorage of HTML5: Space that the web can use on the user’s device. Normally, clearing the browsing history can delete them.
- Flash’s “Local Shared Objects” (the “isolated storage” of Silverlight): These are stored within the Microsoft folder where the user profile is located. You have to enter the folder and delete them. (Example: Vimeo videos). Flash is used to incorporate multimedia elements into a web and stores files on the user’s device.
- The web beacon serves to track your activity by inserting a mini-image that you don’t even notice. When you browse the web, it loads along with the page, and the server from which the photo is downloaded records the access time or the number of times you have accessed it.
These files are more intrusive than cookies, as they are more difficult to delete, store more information, and are independent of the browser used. We do not use this type of storage.
